KONY 2012, the rebuttal

I have noticed that there are many nay-sayers emerging from the recent KONY 2012 phenomenon. I have to say they are right in many respects, but wrong in others, and that I disagree for the most part. I support the KONY 2012 movement.

Yes, people should do their research and not just make their decision just based on the flashy, impressive, inspiring video that has taken the internet by storm. I agree with that. There is more to this than what was presented in the video.

HOWEVER. People keep bringing up the “white-man’s burden”. Some say that we don’t have to help Uganda (or other countries) because they’re not our problem. I don’t even have to go into that, most people can see the ignorance there. Others say that as western countries we feel responsible to help mainly black countries simply because of the atrocities we committed against them in the past. Give me a break. You really think this has anything to do we centuries old guilt? Come on. That’s bullshit.

Others say that since Kony is no longer even in Uganda and he’s on the run then it’s not a problem. So what? Because he’s on the run, and committing his crimes somewhere new, he doesn’t need to be brought to justice? Because he’s most likely starving to death, we should just wait it out? We can’t leave it up to chance. We can’t just hope that he doesn’t return.

Others say that the KONY 2012 campaign is encouraging violent military intervention as opposed to discussion and dialogue. At the risk of sounding like Stephen Harper, that’s simply not true. The purpose of the campaign was to raise awareness, and to peak public interest so that our governments have a reason to do something. Mission fucking accomplished. Multiple times through the most recent video, they speak to Ugandan politicians, as well as to our own politicians. You can do as much work as you want in your brain, but you need hands to it.

I do not doubt for a second that those involved in KONY 2012 have great intentions, nor…

I don’t agree with this group in the sense that I support KONY2012, and I think they are doing the right things. I think the money spent on their awareness campaigns and videos is very important. The point of the campaign is to peak public interest so that the government has a reason to do something about it. However, I do agree with them that people should be informed about both sides, and make their decision not just because it’s a “thing”
